wordpress maintenance checklist eu gdpr

This is not a generic list copied from other blogs. This is the exact wordpress maintenance checklist I actually follow for my clients in the US, UK, Cyprus, and Bangladesh. I have secured and monitored 50+ WordPress sites since 2013, recovered 1 hacked site properly, and worked as Server & Security Specialist for Probashi Palli Group. I am EC-Council C|CT Certified ID ECC4976018235. Here is what real maintenance looks like when you are responsible for a business site.

1. Backups That I Actually Test

Most people take backups but never test restore. I use 3-2-1: on-site backup in wp-content/updraft, off-site backup, and offline copy every month on my end (according to plans). Before any plugin update, I take a manual backup and I test restore once per month on a staging subdomain (according to plans). If restore fails, backup is useless.

2. Safe Updates — Not One-Click

I never click Update All in production. My workflow: check changelog, backup, update on staging, test checkout/forms, then update production during low traffic. I keep a rollback note. For clients like Signature Group Canada and Accentuate Technology Inc USA where I worked remote, this process prevented downtime during critical campaigns.

3. Security Hardening I Do Every Month

My stack is LEMP, not just cPanel. Real hardening means:

  • Enforce 2FA for admins, limit login attempts, change login URL if needed
  • Cloudflare WAF rules + Turnstile for forms, not just Wordfence
  • Disable file editing: define('DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT', true); in wp-config.php
  • Check file permissions and remove unused plugins/themes — old themes are backdoors

Reference for hardening: I follow guidance from OWASP WordPress Security and EC-Council C|CT training.

4. What EU Clients Specifically Ask Me

EU businesses under GDPR need three things most US freelancers ignore:

  • DPA: I sign a Data Processing Agreement on request. Template available.
  • Data location: Backups stored in EU — Hetzner Frankfurt or S3 Frankfurt region.
  • Monthly Report: I send what was updated, backup status, uptime %, and vulnerabilities found. This report is required for many EU ISO audits.

Official GDPR requirements are at gdpr.eu. I do not provide legal advice, only technical implementation.

5. What Is NOT Included — Honest Scope

To stay real: My care plans do NOT include custom development, full redesign, or legal compliance certification. Malware cleanup after a hack is separate project scope — I have done only 1 full recovery, most of my work is prevention so sites don't get hacked in first place. I also do not fix hosting billing issues — I advise, you pay host directly.

My current care plans reflect this real scope — Essential €99, Business €149, Pro from €199 ex-VAT, with EU reverse charge available. No long-term contract.
